The Wallop Parish News

The Parish Magazine is produced monthly under the auspices of the Church, and is full of useful information, including a diary of events.  The advertisements highlight the large number of excellent builders, plumbers and electrician etc. who live and work in the villages.

Bus and Coach

There is a daily service from Andover to London (Heathrow and Victoria).  There are local services from the villages to Salisbury, Andover and Stockbridge.  Generally, routes are scenic rather than quick.

Clubs and Groups

The Danebury Players, the Wallop Artists, The Wallop Valley Field Club, the Wallops Horticultural Society, the W.I., Brownies, football and cricket clubs, and the mothers and toddlers group and various church groups all thrive.

Environment

There is no mains drainage in the Wallops.  Most houses have their own septic tanks, though some recent developments have a communal system.  The Wallop Brook which runs through the villages tends to dry up in the summer.  Both villages have conservation areas and listed buildings, and most trees are legally protected.

Local Government

Each village has its own Parish Council.  We are in Test Valley Borough Council's area.

Major Towns

Stockbridge (which has a good range of shops) is 5 miles away, Andover 7, Salisbury 11, and Winchester 13 miles away.  Together they provide a full range of shops, hospitals and theatres.  Portsmouth and Southampton have modern shopping malls.

Police

The nearest fully manned police station is in Andover.  There is however a designated police constable based locally, who has special responsibility for the Wallops.  Both villages support a Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Post Office

There is one post office, in the Wallop Village Shop in Over Wallop.  It provides a very full range of post office services.  In Nether Wallop a temporary post office opens in the village hall twice a week.

Pubs

There are three pubs: the Five Bells in Nether Wallop, the George at the crossroads and the White Hart in Over Wallop.  Each has its own character but all provide good food and drink.

Rail

Grateley Station is 4 miles away.  There are fast trains to London throughout the day.  The station is manned during peak periods only.  You can buy a ticket from the machine on the platform, or if you don't trust machines you can buy a ticket from the inspector on the train.  Car parking space is not guaranteed.  Not all trains stop at Grateley.  There are main-line stations also at Andover and Salisbury.

Refuse Collection

The Wallops use the wheelie-bin system.  There is an alternate weekly collection from the household waste bin and the recyclable brown bin.  Garden refuse is collected every two weeks from sacks provided on payment, by the Council.

Shops

The Wallop Village Shop in Over Wallop is run as a cooperative.  It provides all basic needs and is remarkably well stocked.  The Trout Wine Shop in Nether Wallop has a wide variety of wines and basic groceries.  The two petrol outlets - Pinchbeck at the crossroads and Clegg and Brooking at the army camp - offer mini-markets.

Schools

Test Valley School in Stockbridge provides secondary education, while the Wallop Primary School in Nether Wallop has a fine local reputation.  There are a number of good private schools in the area.  Salisbury boasts two of the finest grammar schools in the country.  The Over Wallop Under Fives are a mother and toddler group, meeting weekly, and the School Lane Play Group, in the grounds of Wallop Primary, also has a fine reputation.
