  • The Brook

A typical Hampshire chalk stream whose source is in Townsend Field.  The brook flows through the Wallop villages that were built on the streamline and ultimately into the River Test.

  • The Buildings:

Many of the older residences were built of chalk cob, half timber and brick infilling set on flint foundations.  Roofing materials were almost universally of thatch.

  • The Natural History:

Many of the older species such as the Bustard have disappeared.  However Rabbits, Wood Pigeons, Pheasant and Partridge still remain.  The Stone Curlew is still a regular visitor to the Farmland adjacent to Porton Down and can be heard virtually every summer evening.  If you  take a late evening walk across to the Porton boundary from the Over Wallop cricket field, they can often be heard and seen as they fly to feed on the  various fields.  One pair has been regularly seen  in the fields to the South of the A343.  As for the Quail, last summer there were a pair in the  same area which were heard and seen on several occasions.

  • The Community Today:

The more affluent post war years have brought changes to both agriculture and the community.  Many of the older properties have been improved and some new properties built.  The village however retains it's friendly and largely peaceful atmosphere.
